Youth Barista Program
In September of 2007, Union Project launched an onsite café training program targeting young adults aging out of foster care.  Partners for the Youth Barista Program include Starbucks, Kitchens with Mission, Social Innovation Accelerator, Family Links, and the Allegheny County Department of Human Services.

Over the past year, 30 youth and young adults (16-21) aging out of foster care have participated in an 8-week barista training program based on the successful Kitchens with Mission model.  Depending on the level of community support and the growth of the cafe, the Union Project will increase this annual number to create maximum positive outcomes for these at-risk youth.  New students enroll every four weeks.

Studies show that:
  • 25% of foster youth end up homeless in their first years out of the system
  • fewer than 50% have jobs
  • less than 50% complete high school or obtain a GED
  • nearly 40% of the homeless population reports having been through the foster care system
This program works to change these numbers locally by providing youth with skills and job placements in café and food service, allowing them to earn a living wage.

Starbucks donates all coffee, tea, syrups and paper products used in Eat UP Café and for training in the Youth Barista Program.
