Ceramics Classes

Union Project’s ceramics classes encourage the making of beautiful things, both hand-made objects and connections among people. Your class registration furthers UP’s mission to use our space to bring people together to connect, create, and celebrate.

After you register for your class, pay here or call 412-363-4550x22. Payment must be received two weeks before the class starts to reserve your spot. All materials and supplies are included in class price. Ceramic toolkits are available for $20.

Winter session:
10 Saturdays, Feb 4-April 7, 9am-11:30am
Cost:$195

This class is designed to accommodate those with little or no ceramic experience, skills, and also those with some proficiency who wish to increase or refresh their proficiency and technical skills. Hands on instruction will focus on an introduction to the fundamentals of wheel-throwing and hand-building as well as a challenge to those who have already mastered these basics.  Through a student-driven approach, this course will be a comprehensive tour of the creative process from wedging raw clay through centering, maximizing volume, trimming, and glazing and firing techniques

YOUTH CERAMICS CLASS IS FULL. Have you checked out the Family Ceramics Class?
Students, ages 8-13, will create functional and decorative work drawing upon their
imaginations and environment for inspiration. Projects will provide students with an opportunity to find inspiration in area architecture and natural forms. Students will have an opportunity to explore various hand building techniques and will also get a chance to try their hand at the potter's wheel.

Winter session: 
6 Mondays, Feb 6- March 12
10:00am-12:00pm

This class is designed for homeschoolers, ages 7-13, to have fun socializing with their peers while creating with clay and learning various ceramics techniques. Students will receive one-on-one attention on the wheel, as well as, complete various handbuilt projects using coil, slab, and pinch techniques. Students will also have time to free play with clay and see other artists work in our community studio.

Winter session: 
6 Wednesdays, Feb 8-March 14, 6-7:30pm, Cost $95
 

This class introduces clay as a medium to our youngest students (5-8 yrs. old). They learn the basics of hand building through masks, pinch pots, sculpture, and coil pots. While working with clay, students' creative ideas will be encouraged by images of historic ceramic works and stories from modern children's literature.

 

Winter workshop: 
Valentines Clay Date: Saturday Feb. 11th, 3:30-5pm
You and your sweety or your best pal, celebrating L-O-V-E, here at Union Project. $40/pair

Winter session: 
8 Mondays, Feb 13- April 2, 6-8pm
Cost:$250/pair, $360/family of up to 4 persons.

Come explore your creative side with your children. In this class, parents and children will get their hands dirty together while learning some basic ceramic techniques. Students will learn hand-building and the potter's wheel, as well as decorating and glazing techniques to create fun and functional pots for your home.

Bring the fam to Union Project for a morning of mud, fun & love!  Suggested donation $25/ family

Winter workshop:
March 10, 10-11:30am
The class will include lessons on making raku clay bodies, various glazes and will wrap up with an evening or two of raku firing. Some hand building techniques will be demonstrated during the class times

Winter session:
Tuesdays, Mar 13-May 1 (Tuesday 6-9pm: Formal Instruction. Saturday 11:30am-3:30pm: Open Studio), Firing is May 4-6 at the Laurelville Wood-fire Kiln
Cost: $250

This class is suitable for students at any level, including first time beginners. Students will create a body of work to be fired in the Union Project wood kiln located in the Laurel Highlands near Mt. Pleasant, PA. Students will be encouraged to produce hand built and or wheel thrown functional objects and sculpture. The fundamentals and principals of atmospheric firing and glazing will be discussed and experienced when the class heads down to the kiln to fire the work over the last weekend in May.
